SoftBank Completes $30 Billion Investment in OpenAI

SoftBank Group completed the final $10 billion tranche of a planned $30 billion investment in OpenAI on October 1, 2026. This final payment, executed through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, concludes a commitment that began with initial tranches on April 1 and July 1. The transaction brings SoftBank's cumulative investment in the AI laboratory to $64.6 billion, granting the Japanese conglomerate an approximately 13% ownership stake.

To fund the final phase, SoftBank utilized proceeds from a $11.1 billion high-yield corporate bond sale, the largest of its kind globally. Following the completion of the investment, SoftBank canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under a $40 billion bridge loan it had secured in March.

OpenAI's most recent fundraising round secured $122 billion in total commitments from anchor investors including SoftBank, Amazon, and Nvidia. These investments value the company at $852 billion.
