BBC News Proposes 100 Job Cuts to Save £5.5 Million

The BBC proposes eliminating over 100 news roles and closing several broadcast channels as part of a £500 million cost-cutting plan by 2028.

The BBC is proposing the elimination of more than 100 roles within its news division to save £5.5 million. Director of News Rachel Jupp announced the cuts via internal email, stating the news division must contribute at least £51 million toward a broader £500 million corporate savings target by 2028. Jupp noted that further savings proposals will be disclosed in early 2027 following a review of long-form journalism costs and presenter usage.

Beyond the newsroom, the broadcaster will end the broadcast channels for BBC Three and BBC Scotland in Spring 2027, moving them exclusively to iPlayer and online platforms. Radio 4 Extra will close entirely. These measures follow the recent layoff of 110 roles in BBC Media Tech.

Director-General Matt Brittin described the reductions as "tough choices" required to address a financial gap between the corporation's high usage rates and the number of citizens paying the annual licence fee. Jupp indicated that while the current proposals are necessary, the savings requirement for News could increase given the organization's financial pressures.
