Chinese Listed Companies Report Profit Margins Half of Global Peers
Chinese listed companies recorded profit margins of 4.88% in the first half of 2026, trailing global peers due to weak domestic demand and currency appreciation.
A Reuters analysis of LSEG data reveals that Chinese listed companies recorded profit margins of 4.88% during the first six months of the year, nearly half the 8.87% margin seen among global peers. The analysis, which covered 5,209 Chinese companies and 9,733 global peers, attributes the squeeze to weak domestic consumer demand and a 10.2% appreciation of the yuan against the dollar since April 2025.
Sector performance varied significantly. Transportation infrastructure led the market with a 20.97% margin, while healthcare technology, tobacco, software, and real estate management recorded losses. Industries prioritized by the government, including technology hardware and automobiles, showed low margins of 3.5% and 2.5% respectively.
While exports drove a rise in third-quarter economic growth to 4.5%, retail sales remained sluggish. The property market continues a multi-year downturn that has eroded household wealth, further impacting the domestic consumption necessary to bolster corporate margins.
