Colorado Implements Training and Permit Law for Semiautomatic Firearms

Colorado Parks and Wildlife developed the curriculum and administrative systems for a new state law taking effect August 1. The legislation requires training and permits for the purchase of specified semiautomatic firearms, including AK- and AR-style rifles.

Under the new system, applicants must submit an online application, pass a background check, and present a government-issued photo ID to their local county sheriff's office. Once issued an eligibility card, buyers have five years to complete an in-person firearms safety course and pass an exam. These courses range from four to 12 hours depending on whether the buyer has previous hunter education certification.

The agency launched the application process on July 27, following a pilot program that began July 20 in Arapahoe, Boulder, Summit, Larimer, and Fremont counties. Laura Clellan, director of the agency, confirmed the system was ready for the state-wide deadline.
