Assam Government Withdraws Criminal Cases Against NEET-UG Protesters

The Government of Assam decided to withdraw all criminal cases registered against individuals who protested alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG medical entrance examination. An official order from the Home and Political Department, signed by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewari, directed authorities to cease all adverse legal actions and expedite the release of detainees.

As of July 26, five cases had been registered across the state, resulting in the arrest of 13 people. The government stated that the matter would be treated as closed. This decision comes in response to demands from civil society groups and student organizations calling for greater accountability and transparency in the examination process.

Officials indicated that the move is intended to facilitate systemic reforms within the higher education ecosystem. By clearing the legal records of the protesters, the state seeks to resolve the tension surrounding the medical entrance exam and shift focus toward structural improvements.
