Malaysia Sets Melaka State Election for November 14
The Election Commission of Malaysia scheduled the Melaka state election for November 14 following the early dissolution of the state legislative assembly.
The Election Commission of Malaysia has scheduled the 16th Melaka state election for November 14, 2026, with nomination day set for October 31 and early voting on November 10. Approximately 687,697 registered voters will cast ballots for 28 seats. The vote follows the September 23 dissolution of the state legislative assembly by Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh, which moved the election forward from its original February 2027 deadline.
The polls serve as a critical test for shifting political alliances. The Barisan Nasional coalition, which previously led the state government, is currently negotiating with potential partners. Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan is exploring a collaboration strategy known as PH Plus after withdrawing its support for the state government in July.
Internal tensions have emerged between Barisan Nasional and the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, as the latter plans to contest 16 seats, including the one held by Ab Rauf Yusoh. This political activity occurs alongside a national decision by the Malaysian king to allow former Prime Minister Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
