Norton Residents Face Eight-Mile Diversion Over Gas Pipe Works

Northern Gas Networks is replacing gas pipes in Norton, North Yorkshire, in a project expected to last 17 weeks. Starting September 30, the company implemented a one-way restriction on Welham Road from Springfield Garth, preventing vehicles from entering Norton or Malton from that direction. The restriction forces residents of over 500 homes to use an eight-mile diversion through Langton village, a route expected to remain in place for up to two weeks.

Northern Gas Networks confirmed the extension to the Springfield Garth junction but stated that access from the level crossing direction would be maintained. Mayor Di Keal warned residents of Lakeside, Park Road, The Avenue, Beechwood Road, and Hunters Way to allow an additional 20 minutes for their morning commutes.

Councillor Keane Duncan condemned the disruption, alleging the company provided less than 24 hours' notice and violated the original project plan. Duncan urged North Yorkshire Council to revoke the roadworks permit until an alternative plan is established, citing safety concerns that motorists might instead use Bazley’s Lane, a subsiding single-track road.
