Supreme Court of India Examines Alternative to Jantar Mantar Protests

The Supreme Court of India agreed on August 3, 2026, to examine a public interest litigation filed by Satish Chand Kaushik seeking an alternative venue for public protests in New Delhi. The petition argues that Jantar Mantar is no longer a suitable site due to logistical challenges, safety concerns, and ingress and egress issues that cause persistent inconvenience for local residents.

A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, noted that demonstrations at the site disrupt the supply of essential goods and medical services. Characterizing the issue as important, the court issued notices to the Government of India, the Government of Delhi, and the Delhi Police Commissioner. The bench further instructed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to obtain formal instructions from these authorities.

During the proceedings, the petitioner's counsel expressed concern regarding potential violence and clashes surrounding a proposed town hall and march to the Prime Minister's residence organized by Arvind Kejriwal. The bench declined to comment on those specific events, stating that the authorities are capable of handling the situation and maintaining law and order.
