Walgreens Boots Alliance is closing additional retail locations in Illinois and Wisconsin as part of a multiyear turnaround program. The initiative follows the acquisition of the pharmacy retailer by the private equity firm Sycamore Partners in August 2025.
Recent closures in 2026 include three sites in Illinois: two in Chicago at 2351 E. 71st Street and 86th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, and one in Rockford at 5503 E. State Street. Additionally, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin site at 2727 W. North Avenue closed in late June.
The company expects to close fewer than 100 stores throughout 2026, a significant reduction from the 1,500 locations shut down in 2025. Following the 2025 acquisition, the total U.S. footprint of the retailer decreased from approximately 8,500 to 8,000 locations.
