Technical Outages Hit Lloyds Banking Group and Monzo
Lloyds Banking Group and Monzo experienced separate technical outages on August 18 and 19, disrupting mobile and online banking for thousands of UK customers.
Major UK banking services faced separate technical disruptions over two days in August 2026. On Tuesday, August 18, Lloyds Banking Group suffered a back-end glitch that locked thousands of customers out of mobile and online banking across its Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands. The outage began around 11:00 a.m., with 70% of issues affecting mobile apps, preventing users from completing transactions or booking flights. Technical teams stabilized the systems shortly after 1:00 p.m., though the group has not disclosed the precise cause.
The following day, Wednesday, August 19, Monzo experienced its own technical outage affecting its mobile application. Reports began around 11:00 a.m. and peaked at 1:00 p.m., with over 3,000 users reporting general app problems and difficulties with funds transfers. Monzo activated its back-up system, Monzo Stand-in, to maintain core services. The bank confirmed that while the app was not fully functional, card payments, ATM withdrawals, and account viewing remained operational.
