HumansFirst Coordinates National Protests Against AI Data Centers

The grassroots organization HumansFirst coordinated a national day of action on July 18, 2026, resulting in 142 protests across 42 U.S. states. Led by co-founder Amy Kremer, the nonpartisan movement opposes the environmental impact of hyperscale data centers, focusing on their high consumption of water and electricity and the resulting increase in local utility costs.

This opposition has caused substantial industry disruption, with 75 projects valued at approximately $130 billion blocked or delayed during the first quarter of 2026. Legislative responses have scaled rapidly, including over 300 state bills and local moratoriums in more than 300 cities and counties.

On July 14, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order establishing the first state-level moratorium on new hyperscale data centers. In response to the backlash, technology companies including NVIDIA and Microsoft are attempting to mitigate community opposition by exploring water-free cooling systems and repurposing existing industrial sites.
