Israeli Military Launches Criminal Probe Into Hind Rajab Killing
The Israeli military initiated a criminal investigation into the 2024 killing of five-year-old Hind Rajab and seven others after admitting troops fired on their vehicle and ambulance.
The Israeli Defense Forces launched a criminal investigation into the January 2024 killing of five-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab and seven other family members in Gaza City. The decision follows an internal fact-finding probe that concluded troops fired upon the Rajab family's car and subsequently shelled a Palestine Red Crescent ambulance dispatched to rescue them. This admission reverses previous military claims that troops were not operating in the area at the time of the incident.
The investigation, conducted by the military police criminal investigation division, focuses on alleged failures in coordinating the movement of the ambulance. Alongside the Rajab case, the military announced a criminal probe into the deaths of 15 emergency and aid workers from March 2025, though it declined to open similar investigations into other incidents, including the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen workers.
Family members and advocates have condemned the move. Wesam Hamada, Hind Rajab's mother, and Kaouther Ben Hania, director of the docudrama "The Voice of Hind Rajab," dismissed the probe as a public relations operation. They argued that existing evidence, such as satellite imagery and audio recordings, should have prompted action sooner and called for justice to be delivered by an independent authority rather than the Israeli military investigating itself.
