Election Officials Debunk Viral 2026 Midterm Fraud Claims

Election officials and nonpartisan experts are refuting viral claims of voter fraud and rigging involving ballot envelopes, missing candidates, and touchscreen vote flipping.

Election officials and nonpartisan experts are debunking several viral claims of voter fraud and rigging ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. In California, the Office of the Ventura County Clerk-Recorder & Registrar of Voters clarified that holes in ballot envelopes are accessibility features for sight-impaired voters and tools for workers to verify empty envelopes, rather than a means to see votes.

In New York City, the New York State Board of Elections explained that multi-page ballots may appear to miss candidates if no individual from a specific party was nominated for a particular race. Meanwhile, experts from the Center for Election Innovation and Research and Election Systems & Software attributed reports of vote flipping on touchscreen machines to user error or screen miscalibration.

Additionally, officials noted that poll worker markings on ballots in states such as North Carolina and Illinois are standard procedural identifiers and do not disqualify the votes. The Verified Voting Foundation urged voters to obtain information directly from local election officials to avoid misinformation.
