Ferrari Luce Electric Car Born From Jeff Bezos Advice
Ferrari Chairman John Elkann revealed that a 2016 conversation with Jeff Bezos sparked the development of the Luce, the company's first fully electric vehicle.
Ferrari Chairman John Elkann revealed that a 2016 conversation with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos prompted the luxury carmaker to pursue electric vehicle development. This strategic shift led to the creation of the Ferrari Luce, the company's first fully electric model, which was developed over five years in partnership with Jony Ive and his design firm, LoveFrom.
Unveiled in May, the Luce has faced investor skepticism and social media mockery due to its unconventional styling. During a panel at the Wave technology conference in Turin, Ive explained that the design intentionally rejects the industry trend of touchscreens. He argued that physical controls are necessary to maintain a tactile connection between the driver and the machine.
Despite the public backlash, Elkann stated that the controversy has only strengthened the company's conviction in the project. The vehicle represents a collaborative effort between teams in Italy and California to move beyond recycling history and instead create a new future for the brand.
