New Mexico Voters Approve Legislator Pay and $393 Million Bonds

New Mexico voters approved constitutional amendments to establish legislator salaries and authorized over $393 million in bonds for education and senior services.

New Mexico voters approved several constitutional amendments and general obligation bond questions during the 2026 elections. The most significant change is the passage of Constitutional Amendment 4, which establishes an annual salary for state legislators starting in 2029. This pay will be capped at the state's median household income, currently approximately $68,000.

Other approved constitutional changes require the governor to provide veto messages for all vetoed bills and remove the requirement for separate school and partisan elections. Voters also authorized the creation of new nominating committees for state university boards of regents.

In addition to the amendments, voters approved three bond questions totaling more than $393 million. These funds are designated for libraries, schools, senior centers, and higher education. The largest portion of this funding, $116 million, will fund a new University of New Mexico School of Medicine facility. Officials state this investment will nearly double the annual graduation rate of healthcare workers in the state.
