AESC Shelves UK Gigafactory Expansion After JLR Talks Stall

AESC, the operator of the United Kingdom's largest battery gigafactory in Sunderland, has shelved plans to expand production and install a third manufacturing line. The decision follows the collapse of supply talks with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which were intended to secure JLR as a customer until its sister company, Agratas, completes a separate gigafactory in Somerset.

Negotiations with JLR stalled because the automaker was unwilling to make formal financial commitments or due to disputes regarding cost and timing. Simultaneously, AESC is facing lower-than-expected demand from Nissan, which has slowed its transition to electric vehicles. These challenges occur as European manufacturers retreat from ambitious electrification targets and the UK government considers cutting electric car sales targets.

As a result of these setbacks, AESC has significantly revised its annual output target, lowering it from an aspirational 38GWh to 15.8GWh.
