B.C. Conservative Party Faces Collapse as MLAs Defect

The Conservative Party of B.C. is experiencing a period of severe instability, with its caucus shrinking from 44 to 35 MLAs following a series of high-profile defections. The turmoil centers on the leadership of Kerry-Lynne Findlay, who became leader on May 30 and has since faced accusations of pushing the party toward a far-right ideology.

On August 25, MLA Rosalyn Bird resigned to sit as an Independent, citing political infighting and a shift in party values. Bird also noted allegations that Findlay offered financial compensation to MLAs in exchange for their resignations. Bird's exit follows the departures of MLAs Ian Paton and Peter Milobar, who intend to form a new centre-right political party. Reports indicate that both Bird and Paton refused requests to step aside to allow Findlay to run for a seat in the legislature.

Parallel to the caucus losses, Randy Hawes, president of the party's Abbotsford-Mission riding association, resigned on August 24. Hawes criticized Findlay's leadership and the party's ideological shift. Meanwhile, MLA Reann Gasper did agree to step down from her Abbotsford-Mission seat to make way for Findlay and will serve as Findlay's deputy chief of staff.

During a press conference in Vancouver, Findlay denied offering financial rewards for resignations and remained defiant, stating that the departures create "amazing opportunities for leadership." The party has also seen the loss of its president, Aisha Estey, and vice-president Sharon White.
