Americans Seek Direct Cultural Ties With China Amid Modernization

Direct encounters with Chinese culture, language, and technology are shifting how some Americans perceive the country, often diverging from traditional media portrayals. Individuals are building long-term connections through music, language study, and travel, with recent visitors noting the scale of modernization and the integration of advanced technology within traditional landscapes in regions such as Zhejiang Province.

This trend is supported by increased accessibility to the country. The National Immigration Administration reported that 17.82 million foreign nationals entered China visa-free during the first half of 2026, representing a 30.6 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Public sentiment reflects a desire for closer ties. A 2026 survey conducted by the Committee of 100 and NORC at the University of Chicago found that 59 percent of Americans favor increased cooperation between the United States and China. These findings align with discussions hosted by the National Committee on United States–China Relations regarding the growing visibility of Chinese cultural influence within the United States.
