Anthropic Launches Low-Cost Claude Sonnet 5.5 AI Model

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family. Positioned as a faster, lower-cost complement to the recently launched Claude Opus 5.5, the model is designed for enterprise tasks such as coding, document creation, and spreadsheet work. It is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, making it half the price of Opus 5.5.

The company stated that Sonnet 5.5 requires fewer tokens to complete the same work as its predecessor and introduces cybersecurity safeguards similar to those in its most capable models. This launch follows a call from CEO Dario Amodei earlier this month for AI companies to slow the development of their most advanced models due to safety concerns. Anthropic noted that Sonnet 5.5 does not advance the frontier of AI capabilities, focusing instead on alignment and targeted risks.

This product expansion occurs as Anthropic prepares for a planned initial public offering. Enterprise customers, including Goldman Sachs, Salesforce, Databricks, and Novo Nordisk, currently account for approximately 80 percent of the company's business. Sonnet 5.5 is available via Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, with a third, cheaper model called Haiku 5.5 expected to launch soon.
