Seattle Residents File Recall Petition Against Mayor Katie Wilson

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson faces a recall petition over public safety failures while balancing conflicting demands regarding the city's surveillance camera system.

Seattle residents Melinda Jacobson and Dale Osterud filed a recall petition against Katie Wilson on August 17, alleging she failed in her duty to protect the city. The petition cites deteriorating public safety, specifically gun violence and human sex trafficking in the Aurora neighborhood, and the removal of CCTV cameras in Little Saigon and the Stadium District. Critics also point to Wilson's delayed response to a July 26 shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival and her push for the resignation of former Police Chief Shon Barnes.

Wilson apologized for communication failures during the shooting response and ordered an investigation by the Office of Inspector General, though her office maintains the recall effort lacks merit. For the petition to proceed to a vote, it must be approved by a judge and secure nearly 70,000 verified signatures within 180 days.

Simultaneously, Wilson is navigating a divide over the city's surveillance infrastructure. On August 18, the Community Not Cameras coalition and Seattle Indivisible protested at City Hall, demanding the dismantling of the Real Time Crime Center to protect immigrants and transgender individuals from federal targeting. In contrast, the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Seattle Association are lobbying for the system's expansion to combat crime. Wilson has disabled some cameras and is awaiting an independent audit expected this fall before making a final decision.
