India Provides Over $7.5 Billion in Aid to Sri Lanka

The Government of India has provided more than $7.5 billion in cumulative developmental and financial assistance to Sri Lanka, according to Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha. This support includes over $850 million in grants and funds projects across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, targeting sectors such as energy, railways, education, healthcare, and housing.

Indian assistance intensified during Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis, which saw the provision of emergency credit lines and critical supplies of food, medicine, and fuel. Recent efforts include a $450 million package for reconstruction and rehabilitation following Cyclone Ditwah. As part of a disaster preparedness relocation strategy, a recent SLR 600 million grant was allocated for medical equipment for the Base Hospital in Deniyaya.

High Commissioner Jha detailed these figures during a review meeting co-chaired by Sri Lankan Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Anil Jayantha Fernando. The assistance initiatives are driven by priorities established by the Sri Lankan government and its citizens to ensure long-term economic resilience.
