Gustavo Petro Calls for Protests Amid Colombian Election Dispute

Outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro used his final presidential speech on Independence Day, July 20, 2026, to call for a general mobilization and peaceful resistance in the streets to protect his government's social and economic reforms. Petro continues to dispute the results of the June presidential election, claiming the process was marred by fraud and interference from the United States and Israel, specifically alleging that Israeli software was used to rig vote tallies.

President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, a conservative lawyer who won the election by approximately 250,000 votes, has accused Petro of plotting a coup to prevent his ascension to office. De la Espriella has characterized Petro's calls for civil disobedience as urban terrorism.
