Government Officials Dismiss Peter Obi's Claims of Death Threats

Nigerian government officials and allies of President Bola Tinubu rejected claims by opposition candidate Peter Obi that he may not survive to contest the 2027 election.

Presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress recently alleged that the government under President Bola Tinubu is deliberately frustrating his activities, stating in an interview that he "might not even be alive" to contest the 2027 election. While Obi clarified he was not making direct accusations, he cited instances of harassment by officials and expressed fear regarding his survival.

Minister of Works David Umahi dismissed these claims during project inspections in Ebonyi State on July 10 and 11, 2026. Umahi characterized Obi's concerns as signs of frustration resulting from President Tinubu's growing popularity and infrastructure development in the South East. He challenged Obi to a public debate on the administration's gains, asserting that the government wants Obi alive specifically so he can lose the next election. In response, Obi stated he would only debate Umahi once the minister qualifies as a presidential candidate for a political party.

Other administration officials echoed this dismissal. Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga called Obi's claims a "fabricated narrative" and "propaganda," while Special Adviser on Policy Communication Daniel Bwala questioned Obi's own qualifications as a candidate, labeling him a "miracle centre presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, the Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation called on the Nigerian Federal Government and security agencies to guarantee Obi's safety. The foundation linked the protection of the candidate to the broader Igbo Presidency Project and the preservation of Nigeria's democratic stability.
