AI-Only ETFs Outperform S&P 500 as Bot-Managed Funds Launch

Fund managers are launching AI-powered ETFs that eliminate human stock selection, with early data showing these bot-managed funds are beating the S&P 500.

A small group of fund managers has launched exchange traded funds (ETFs) that rely exclusively on AI-powered bots for research and stock selection. These funds, which collectively manage approximately $30 million, aim to remove human emotion and cognitive bias from investing while processing data faster than human analysts.

Early performance data shows these AI-only funds are beating the S&P 500. Notable examples include the High Conviction US Equity AI-Managed ETF and two funds launched in February by the Israeli manager FinQ. While these autonomous funds are emerging, many asset managers maintain a more cautious AI-enhanced approach, utilizing AI for risk monitoring and quantitative analysis while keeping human oversight.

Industry sentiment remains divided. A Mercer survey found that 91% of asset managers plan to increase their use of AI tools, yet some firms express concern over the ability of AI to handle extreme market events. Financial advisers also warn that high fees and short track records may hinder widespread adoption among investors.
