Google Launches Motion Assist for Android 17

Google has begun rolling out Motion Assist, a new Android 17 feature designed to reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles. The tool uses a device's accelerometer and gyroscope to detect vehicle movement, displaying small, animated dots around the screen edges that move in sync with the car's motion. This provides a visual reference to resolve the sensory conflict between the inner ear and the eyes that typically causes nausea.

The feature is launching in phases, appearing first on Pixel devices, specifically the Pixel 11 series. Unlike earlier test versions that were blocked by system-level overlay restrictions, Motion Assist now functions consistently across the system UI, including the lock screen and settings. Users can customize the dots' color, shape, and opacity, or use an automatic toggle that activates the feature upon detecting vehicle motion.

This native solution follows a similar implementation by Apple in iOS 18, known as Vehicle Motion Cues, as well as comparable features from manufacturers such as OPPO and vivo.
