Thousands March in London for Cable Street Anniversary
Thousands of protesters marched through East London to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street and protest against the far right.
Thousands of protesters marched through the East End of London on Sunday, October 4, 2026, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. Demonstrators gathered at Tower Hamlets Town Hall and marched to St George’s Gardens to honor the 1936 event where anti-fascist protesters blocked the British Union of Fascists from entering the area.
Lutfur Rahman, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, addressed the crowd and vowed that fascists and the far right would never run riot in the borough. Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn also spoke, criticizing anti-migrant rhetoric and the language of Nigel Farage and the Reform party. Corbyn further alleged that far-right parties across Europe are funded by Elon Musk.
Participating groups included the trade union Unite and the Jewish Bloc for Palestine. The event was marked by tension when some marchers chanted that "Zionism is fascism," leading the Campaign Against Antisemitism to claim the anniversary was hijacked by bigots. Representatives from the Campaign Against Antisemitism engaged in a brief confrontation with demonstrators, resulting in the Metropolitan Police arresting one man for breach of the peace and public order offences.
