Civil Rights Leaders Organize March on Washington for Voting Rights
Al Sharpton and a coalition of civil rights groups will lead the March on Washington 2026 on August 28 to protest the erosion of voting protections.
A coalition of civil rights and labor organizations, led by Al Sharpton and the National Action Network, announced plans for the "March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote." Scheduled for August 28, the event coincides with the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington and will take place at the Lincoln Memorial.
Organizers are responding to an April 2 Supreme Court of the United States ruling that gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This decision restricted the use of racial demographics in congressional redistricting and struck down a majority-Black district in Louisiana. Leaders argue the ruling has intensified the struggle for Black political representation and enabled racial gerrymandering in southern states, including Alabama.
The march also targets broader restrictions on voting introduced by the Trump administration, such as mail-in ballot restrictions and proof-of-citizenship requirements. Beyond voting rights, the coalition intends to advocate for economic dignity and affordability. Participating organizations include the NAACP, National Urban League, and the League of United Latin American Citizens. A delegation from the Congressional Black Caucus, led by Representative Yvette Clarke, is expected to attend.
