Brookdale Senior Living Acquires 17 Communities and Refinances Debt
Brookdale Senior Living Inc. agreed to acquire 17 leased communities for $157 million and secured $249 million in financing to refinance 2027 mortgage debt.
Brookdale Senior Living Inc. announced two financial transactions on August 5, 2026, designed to increase its real estate ownership and optimize its capital structure. The company entered into a definitive agreement to purchase 17 senior living communities it currently leases for approximately $157 million. This acquisition involves a 735-unit portfolio and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, which will raise the company's owned portion of consolidated units to approximately 77% and reduce 2027 annual cash rent payments by about $11 million.
Simultaneously, the company secured $249 million in fixed-rate financing from Fannie Mae, facilitated by JLL Real Estate Capital, LLC. This funding was used to refinance $244 million of mortgage debt that would have matured in 2027. The new financing carries a fixed interest rate of 6.16% and matures in 2031, ensuring Brookdale has no further mortgage debt maturities until 2028.
