Texas General Land Office Explores Power Plants on State Lands

The Texas General Land Office issued a Request for Information to explore the development of dependable and dispatchable power sources on state-owned land. The initiative focuses on three specific technologies: geothermal energy, small modular nuclear reactors, and natural gas plants.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham stated the effort is necessary to support a growing population and increasing electricity demand from residential, business, and industrial sectors. The agency is currently seeking input from energy providers and developers to identify technologies that can sustain the state's power needs for decades. This move is part of a broader strategy titled "Texas Engine: Fueled, Fed and Fortified," which aims to leverage state lands to enhance the economy and national security.

The agency manages over 13 million acres of state land and mineral rights. While it typically leases this land for farming and oil and gas development, this expansion into power plant development is viewed as an extension of its existing business model. Revenue generated from these state lands is used to fund the Permanent School Fund for public education. The Texas Geothermal Energy Alliance praised the initiative.
