UK Launches £1 Billion Program Amid Neurodivergent Employment Crisis

The Department for Work and Pensions has launched the £1 billion Connect to Work programme, aiming to support 300,000 disabled people by 2030. The initiative comes as young neurodivergent people in the United Kingdom face severe structural barriers to employment, resulting in a decline in career ambition and a rise in learned helplessness.

Employment data shows graduate recruitment at leading UK employers has dropped 24.5% since 2022. Simultaneously, employment tribunal cases involving neurodivergent conditions rose 95% between 2020 and 2025. The professional environment is further complicated by a Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruling defining sex in the Equality Act 2010 as the sex recorded at birth, creating uncertainty for transgender employees.

Critics argue that government coaching cannot replace systemic changes in recruitment and workplace safety. Case manager Gunjan Odedra stated that therapy cannot be used as a mop for policy failure, arguing that individual psychological support cannot compensate for structural abandonment.
