Tim Cook Details Apple Leadership Transition to John Ternus
Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook discussed his transition from CEO to John Ternus, emphasizing a hands-off approach to leadership and a focus on global policy.
Executive Chairman Tim Cook discussed his first month in his new role following his transition from CEO of Apple Inc. in September 2026. In an interview with The Independent in London, Cook explained that the handover to new CEO John Ternus was planned for years to serve as a textbook example of a corporate leadership transition.
To ensure Ternus began his tenure with momentum, Cook timed the launch of the iPhone Duo to coincide with the leadership change on September 1. Cook encouraged Ternus to develop his own leadership style rather than mimicking Cook's approach, drawing a parallel to how Cook did not mimic Steve Jobs.
Now focusing on worldwide policy and interfacing with global governments, Cook stated he is not interfering in Ternus's management of the company. He described their relationship as one based on frequent communication and trust, noting that while he remains a resource for the new CEO, he is not meddling in daily operations.
