Trump Administration Forces University of Virginia President to Resign

The president of the University of Virginia, James Ryan, resigned on Friday following direct pressure from the Trump administration. The United States Department of Justice demanded Ryan's resignation to resolve a federal investigation into whether the university sufficiently complied with orders banning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

While the University of Virginia dissolved its DEI office in March, federal officials argued the institution had not gone far enough in removing such initiatives. This resignation marks the first time the current administration has successfully forced the departure of a university official.

The move coincides with broader federal efforts to reshape higher education and primary schooling. The administration is currently withholding $6.8 billion in funding for grade schools. In a separate action, the government released $175 million in frozen funds to the University of Pennsylvania after the institution agreed to delete the records of swimmer Lia Thomas and bar transgender athletes from women's teams.

Supporting these shifts, JD Vance has advocated for reforming universities to end what he describes as left-wing domination, suggesting the United States adopt models similar to those used in Hungary to force institutions to choose between survival and adopting less biased teaching approaches.
