Russia Rejects European Peace Terms Amid Escalating Drone Strikes

Russia rejects European and Ukrainian peace conditions while continuing high-precision strikes in Ukraine as Kyiv intensifies drone attacks on Moscow and Russian fuel infrastructure.

The Kremlin rejected peace conditions proposed by Ukraine and European partners on June 7, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserting that Russia maintains maximalist negotiating demands. While spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Russia remains open to dialogue with European governments, he dismissed the use of ultimatums and criticized the European assumption that negotiations should be based on perceived Russian weakness.

These diplomatic tensions coincide with a surge in military activity. Ukraine intensified drone campaigns against Russian infrastructure, including a massive attack on Moscow City and a southeast oil refinery that killed an eight-year-old girl. These strikes on fuel infrastructure have triggered fuel rationing across Russia and occupied southern Ukraine. In response, Russia launched 90 drones against Ukraine on June 18-19 and executed multiple high-precision strikes against Ukrainian defense and energy facilities between June 13 and 19.

Within the European Union, President of the European Council Antonio Costa initiated brief diplomatic contacts with the Kremlin to open communication channels. However, these efforts created divisions among EU leaders in Brussels, with some advocating for reopened negotiations while others prioritize increased pressure through sanctions. Meanwhile, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation lowered its key interest rate to 14.25 percent, a move critics link to declining institutional independence from the Kremlin.
