SMBC Aviation Capital Orders 200 Boeing and Airbus Jets

During the Farnborough Airshow on July 20, SMBC Aviation Capital announced separate commitments to purchase 200 narrow-body aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. The lessor ordered 100 Boeing 737 MAX jets, comprising 60 737-10 and 40 737-8 aircraft. This represents the company's first purchase of the high-capacity 737-10 variant, which is currently awaiting certification, and brings its total 737 MAX portfolio to 450 aircraft.

Simultaneously, the company committed to 100 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft, including 65 A321neos and 35 A320neos. Deliveries for the Airbus order are scheduled for the first half of the 2030s. The procurement strategy aims to secure production slots beyond 2030, a move following the company's acquisition of Air Lease Corporation.

CEO Peter Barrett stated the Boeing order reflects a customer demand to upgauge to the 737-10, while maintaining that the A320neo continues to serve a clear market role. Regarding propulsion, SMBC firmed up an agreement for CFM International Leap-1A engines to power 35 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft and will use Leap-1B engines for the Boeing 737 MAX order.
