Latvia Thwarts Armed Belarus Border Incursion and Sabotage

Latvian forces stopped armed escorts from forcing 20 migrants across the border from Belarus, prompting Lithuania to deploy military reinforcements to its own borders.

The National Armed Forces of Latvia thwarted an attempt by masked and armed escorts from Belarus to force at least 20 illegal migrants across the border on Monday evening. The escorts, armed with handguns, threatened Latvian soldiers and aggressively pushed the migrants toward Latvian territory. Following the confrontation, masked individuals entered Latvia to damage an electrical distribution cabinet and steal two surveillance cameras before retreating into Belarus.

Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava described the incident as particularly demonstrative and aggressive, warning that such provocations could lead to serious consequences for Belarus. While the Latvian government views the event as part of a broader hybrid threat, State Border Guard Chief Guntis Pujāts suggested that organized crime groups exploiting Belarusian authorities might be responsible rather than state services. In response, Latvia extended an enhanced border protection regime in several municipalities through the end of the year.

The incident triggered a security response in neighboring Lithuania. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas announced the deployment of Lithuanian armed forces to assist border guards along the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region. Katelynas noted that Lithuania has prepared legal regulations to expand the options for officers to use weapons at the state border to counter potential hybrid threats, though he emphasized a goal of de-escalation.
