OpenAI Cuts GPT-5.6 Sol API Pricing by 20 Percent

OpenAI reduced developer pricing for its GPT-5.6 Sol model to compete with rival AI firms from Anthropic and Chinese developers.

OpenAI reduced developer pricing for its frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20 percent for a three-month period beginning August 21, 2026. The price cuts apply to the company's application programming interface (API) and eligible credit plans for Codex and ChatGPT Work.

Under the new pricing structure, standard short-context use for GPT-5.6 Sol costs $4 per 1 million input tokens and $20 per 1 million output tokens, a decrease from the previous rates of $5 and $30. Pricing for Pro, Plus, and Business subscriptions remains unchanged.

This decision follows price reductions for the GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna models implemented last month. The company is adjusting its costs as it faces increasing competition from Anthropic, specifically its Claude Fable 5 and Claude Opus 5 models, as well as various Chinese AI models.
