OpenAI Cuts GPT-5.6 Sol API Pricing to Rival Anthropic

OpenAI reduced developer pricing for its frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20 percent for a three-month period starting August 21, 2026. The price for standard short-context use dropped from $5 to $4 per 1 million input tokens and from $30 to $20 per 1 million output tokens.

These reductions apply to the company's application programming interface (API) and eligible credit plans for Codex and ChatGPT Work. Pricing for Pro, Plus, and Business subscriptions remains unchanged. This move follows price cuts implemented last month for the mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model, which saw a 20 percent reduction, and the lower-cost Luna model, which saw an 80 percent reduction.

The pricing shift comes as the company faces increasing competition from Chinese AI models and Anthropic. For comparison, Anthropic prices its Claude Opus 5 model at $5 per 1 million input and $25 per 1 million output tokens, while its Claude Fable 5 model is priced higher at $10 per 1 million input and $50 per 1 million output tokens.
