Market Experts Warn of AI Bubble and Historic Valuations

Howard Marks and Sam Altman warn that overexcited investors and historic stock valuations are creating a market bubble driven by artificial intelligence.

Financial leaders and technology executives are warning that the U.S. stock market has entered the early stages of a bubble. Howard Marks, co-chairman of Oaktree Capital, stated that investors are making a critical mistake by assuming current trends will persist indefinitely rather than expecting a reversion to the mean. He expressed particular alarm over high valuations being applied to average companies within the S&P 500, comparing the current optimism to the environment of 1997 prior to the dot-com crash.

Market indicators support these concerns, with the Shiller CAPE ratio hitting nearly 39, one of the highest readings in 150 years. The Nasdaq has reached 105% of U.S. GDP for the first time in history, while the Wilshire 5000 stands at a record 212% of GDP. This growth is heavily concentrated in mega-cap stocks like Nvidia, mirroring the fragility of the late 1990s.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that investors are likely overexcited about artificial intelligence and warned that some will lose significant money due to inflated startup valuations. Beyond financial risks, the AI boom faces a physical bottleneck in electricity. The United States Department of Energy reports that data center power consumption could rise to 12% of total U.S. power by 2028, with Virginia serving as the epicenter of this strain.
