Democrats Lead in Colorado Flip Bid and Win in Kansas
Democratic candidate Jessica Killin led early returns in Colorado's 5th District while Representative Sharice Davids secured a fifth term in Kansas.
Democratic candidate Jessica Killin led incumbent Republican Jeff Crank in early returns for Colorado's 5th Congressional District on Tuesday night. As of 9:47 p.m., Killin held 52% of the vote to Crank's 45.2%. The race for the Colorado Springs-area seat represents a potential historic shift, as the district has never elected a Democrat in its 50-year history. The campaign saw over $15 million in spending, a sevenfold increase from 2024, with both candidates focusing on the cost of living and affordability in El Paso County.
In Kansas, U.S. Representative Sharice Davids won reelection to the 3rd Congressional District, securing her fifth term. Davids defeated Republican Eric Jenkins and Libertarian Steve Hohe, leading Jenkins 66 percent to 33 percent at the time the race was called. Davids entered the contest with a substantial fundraising advantage, raising approximately $3.7 million compared to $19,000 for Jenkins.
Davids, the first Native American woman and first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Kansas in Congress, campaigned on pragmatic leadership and bipartisan cooperation. This victory follows a series of double-digit reelection wins for Davids, despite previous Republican attempts to redraw the district map to favor their party.
