UK Grocery Price Inflation Hits Lowest Rate Since 2024

Grocery price inflation in the United Kingdom fell to 2.1% as summer heatwaves shifted consumer spending toward chilled foods and frozen treats.

Grocery price inflation in the United Kingdom fell to 2.1% in the four weeks ending August 9, marking the lowest rate since October 2024. Data from Worldpanel by Numerator shows that average grocery spending dropped to £410, a decrease of £14.24 from the previous month, which had been inflated by World Cup activity.

Summer heatwaves significantly altered consumer behavior. Shoppers increased spending on soft drinks by 15.1% and stocked up on ice cream, sorbet, and frozen fruit. Sally Ball, business unit director at Worldpanel by Numerator, noted that mealtimes shifted later to avoid the heat, with 13% of evening meals now eaten after 8 p.m.

Market dynamics shifted toward discounters and online services. Lidl gained the most market share, rising to 8.8%, while Ocado recorded the fastest growth with a 13.1% sales increase. Among the major supermarket chains, Sainsbury's was the strongest performer with a 3.5% rise in sales. Consumers increasingly relied on discounts, with promotions applied to 31.3% of all sales.
