Court Orders Mayor Mamdani to Disclose Rent Freeze Communications

Justice Brendan T. Lantry of the New York State Supreme Court ordered the administration of Zohran Mamdani to turn over written communications with the New York City Rent Guidelines Board. The ruling follows a lawsuit filed by landlords seeking to nullify a June vote that froze rents on rent-stabilized homes, the first time in nearly 60 years that both one- and two-year leases were frozen simultaneously.

Landlords allege the board ignored their financial challenges due to pressure from the mayor to fulfill a campaign promise. Justice Lantry stated the disclosure is necessary to determine if the board's decision constituted a violation of lawful procedure or an abuse of discretion.

The mayor's office and city lawyers maintain the board acted properly, arguing that most landlords can manage a freeze while tenants cannot absorb higher costs. Lawyer Randy Mastro, representing the landlords, characterized the process as having a predetermined outcome.
