Tanzania Charges Chadema Official John Pambalu With Treason
Tanzanian authorities charged opposition official John Pambalu with treason for allegedly attempting to obstruct the 2025 General Election.
Tanzanian authorities charged John Pambalu, a senior official and former youth wing leader of the opposition party Chadema, with treason on Wednesday. Pambalu is accused of attempting to persuade the public to obstruct the 2025 General Election and organizing protests to intimidate the Executive of the Republic of Tanzania. In Tanzania, treason charges carry a potential death penalty.
Pambalu is the second high-ranking Chadema official to face treason charges, following party leader Tundu Lissu. The legal actions follow the October 2025 elections, which President Samia Suluhu Hassan won with 98 percent of the vote after Chadema was excluded from the ballot.
The period following the election was marked by violent protests. While a government inquiry reported 518 deaths, opposition and rights groups claim security forces killed approximately 2,000 people. Chadema deputy chairperson John Heche announced the charges to a public meeting in Arusha, vowing that the party would fight the legal battle to the end.
