OpenAI Seeks $30 Billion in Funding at $1.25 Trillion Valuation

OpenAI is finalizing a $30 billion funding round led by UAE investors and Coatue to secure capital and computing capacity before a future public offering.

OpenAI is finalizing a funding round of up to $30 billion, a move that would value the artificial intelligence company at $1.25 trillion. Investors from the United Arab Emirates and Coatue Management, L.L.C. are leading the round, which serves as an opportunistic bridge before the company eventually enters the public market.

Beyond the capital raise, the company is negotiating a commercial agreement with the United Arab Emirates to increase its computing capacity. This infrastructure is necessary to support OpenAI's objective of spending $600 billion on compute by 2030.

Internal timelines for an initial public offering remain inconsistent. While CFO Sarah Friar previously told employees the company would go public in 2027, CEO Sam Altman recently stated that the current moment would be an "ill-advised moment to go public."

The funding push comes as OpenAI's primary competitor, Anthropic, has confidentially filed for an IPO. Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.
