BYD September Exports Surge as Global Sales Lag Annual Goal

BYD reported a 17% increase in September vehicle sales driven by a 153.9% surge in exports despite missing its year-to-date sales targets.

The Chinese automaker BYD reported a 17% year-on-year increase in global vehicle sales for September, totaling 463,561 units. This growth was driven primarily by a 153.9% surge in exports of passenger vehicles and pickups, which reached 179,877 units and accounted for nearly 40% of the month's total sales.

Despite the September uptick, the company faces challenges in its home market where domestic demand remains weak due to a real-estate downturn and reduced government incentives. For the first nine months of 2026, BYD sold 3,131,576 vehicles, a 4% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. This puts the company behind its annual sales target of 5 million to 5.5 million vehicles.

To offset domestic weakness and avoid European Union duties of approximately 27% on battery electric vehicles, BYD is expanding its manufacturing footprint in Europe. The company plans to build three assembly plants and a battery facility, including a plant in Hungary expected to begin production between November and December. BYD has set a long-term target for overseas shipments to exceed 2.5 million vehicles by 2027.
