Developers Release Apps to Detect Smart Glasses Recording Devices
Developers launched smartphone applications that scan for Bluetooth signals to detect smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta and Snap Spectacles in public spaces.
Yves Jeanrenaud and other developers released a series of smartphone applications designed to detect smart glasses, including Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Snap Spectacles. The tools, such as the Nearby Glasses app, address public concerns regarding surreptitious recording by scanning for Bluetooth Low Energy signals used to pair the glasses with mobile devices.
Technical limitations persist, as the apps can only identify if the devices are powered on rather than whether they are actively recording. Developers warn that the tools are imperfect, prone to false positives, and can be obstructed by physical barriers like walls or human bodies. Jeanrenaud stated he does not want to promote techsolutionism or make people feel falsely secure, though he hopes the app is useful.
Despite these flaws, the tools have seen rapid adoption. Nearby Glasses has surpassed 100,000 downloads on the Google Play Store.
