Russia and Azerbaijan Exchange Protests Over Drone Incidents

Russia and Azerbaijan both summoned diplomats on July 6 to protest drone strikes and incidents targeting their respective diplomatic missions and commercial assets.

Diplomatic tensions escalated on July 6 as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan both summoned ambassadors to protest drone-related incidents.

In Moscow, Russian officials summoned Swedish Ambassador Anna Christina Therese Johannesson after two unidentified drones crashed at the Russian Embassy in Stockholm. One drone carried red paint and another featured a fake bomb. Russian Ambassador Sergei Belyayev submitted a formal note of protest to Sweden, alleging a failure to secure the mission and a neglect to investigate years of similar vandalism.

Simultaneously, the Azerbaijani government summoned Russian Ambassador Mikhail Yevdokimov in Baku. Azerbaijan lodged a strong protest following a July 5 drone strike on a SOCAR fuel station in the Mykolaiv region of Ukraine, which damaged an administrative building. Azerbaijani officials asserted the strike was part of a deliberate pattern, citing previous attacks on SOCAR facilities in Odesa and Zhytomyr, as well as damage to the Azerbaijani Embassy in Kyiv and an honorary consulate in Kharkiv.

Both nations invoked the Vienna Convention in their protests. Azerbaijan demanded that Russia conduct a comprehensive investigation into the destruction of civilian infrastructure and diplomatic premises in Ukraine.
