EU Disburses Billions to Ukraine and Proposes New Russia Sanctions
The European Union is releasing billions in military and budget support to Ukraine while proposing over 80 new sanctions targets against Russia.
The European Union is executing a massive financial support strategy for Ukraine, disbursing a first tranche of 9.1 billion euros in June 2026 as part of a broader 90-billion-euro assistance package. This initial payment includes 5.9 billion euros dedicated to drone procurement and 3.2 billion euros for direct budget support. Separately, the EU released a 2.8 billion euro payment under the Ukraine Facility on June 8, bringing total funding through that specific instrument to over 29.5 billion euros. This payment followed Ukraine's completion of 11 reform indicators, prompting the European Commission to provide additional compensation for early implementation.
In Nicosia, Cyprus, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas reported that Western sanctions have cost Russia between $1.2 trillion and $1.5 trillion. Kallas announced that over 80 new targets, including defense sector members and state propagandists, have been proposed for the next Foreign Affairs Council meeting to further dismantle the Russian war economy.
Additional military support is expected as the Government of Hungary lifts its veto on 6.6 billion euros from the European Peace Facility. The combined measures aim to maintain Ukraine's macro-financial stability and provide critical military hardware for ongoing operations.
