Retail Investors Hold AI Portfolio After Aschenbrenner Fund Loss
Retail investors on the Autopilot platform continue to track Leopold Aschenbrenner's AI stock holdings despite a 67% loss at Aschenbrenner's hedge fund.
Approximately 5,000 retail investors continue to follow a portfolio mirroring the public stock holdings of Leopold Aschenbrenner via the Autopilot platform. This persistence comes after Aschenbrenner's hedge fund, Situational Awareness, suffered a 67% loss in July. The losses were driven by leverage and volatility in AI-infrastructure stocks, which forced Aschenbrenner to sell the majority of his public holdings to Citadel LLC at a 10% discount.
While the hedge fund faced significant turmoil, Autopilot's mirroring strategy remained active with $28 million in capital. The platform holds assets including Nebius, Coreweave, and Bloom Energy. Brian Schardt, the CEO of Autopilot, noted that the platform's strategy differs from the hedge fund because it is not leveraged.
The retail portfolio experienced a brief outflow of $3 million to $5 million following news of the hedge fund's struggles. However, the portfolio has since recovered, rallying 35% from its lowest point last Wednesday.
