Nepal Finance Minister Sparks Debate Over Anti-India Sentiment

Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle triggered political backlash in Nepal after claiming that associating Nepali nationalism with anti-Indianism is now over.

Nepal Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle sparked a domestic political debate after stating at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi that the era of associating Nepali nationalism with "anti-Indianism" is over. Wagle, who also serves as vice-chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, intended to project a development diplomacy approach to position Nepal as a vibrant bridge between India and China.

Former government officials and critics condemned the remarks as immature or problematic. Former foreign ministers Pradeep Gyawali, Kamal Thapa, and Sujata Koirala argued that raising concerns regarding the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, border disputes, and the 2015 blockade is a matter of national interest rather than anti-India sentiment. Thapa specifically questioned whether Wagle's comments represented the official position of the government.

The controversy unfolds as Prime Minister Balendra Shah prepares for a proposed visit to India intended to strengthen bilateral ties and address outstanding concerns between the two nations.
