Google Maps Launches Live Fuel Price Tracking in UK
Google integrated government Fuel Finder data into Google Maps and Waze to show real-time petrol and diesel prices for UK motorists.
Google began displaying live petrol and diesel prices for motorists in the United Kingdom on Thursday. The feature integrates data from the government's Fuel Finder platform into both Google Maps and Waze to increase price transparency and foster competition among retailers.
The rollout comes as diesel prices reached a record high of over £2 per litre, driven by global supply pressures from the US war with Iran and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that the ability to locate cheaper fuel could save car-owning households an average of £40 per year.
While the government reports 99% participation from forecourts, some industry experts have questioned the accuracy and coverage of the Fuel Finder data. Google stated it will independently verify the information and only display prices with high confidence to ensure reliability for users.
