Rocky View County Pauses New Data Centre Proposals

The Rocky View County council voted last week to implement a temporary moratorium on new data centre proposals. The pause remains in effect until the municipality establishes specific regulations for such developments, which are expected to be finalized in the coming months.

Councillor Alison Whiting, who introduced the motion, stated that the data centre landscape has changed dramatically over the past year and that the pause allows the county to seek necessary answers. Rocky View County, which surrounds the northern, eastern, and western limits of Calgary, has experienced significant interest from developers.

The council has taken varying actions on previous projects. It previously approved zoning for a project by Beacon AI Centers in the hamlet of Indus, but it rejected a proposal from Kineticor near Balzac last year.
